According to the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), 20 people attempted to illegally enter Lithuania from Belarus within a day. This marks an increase in the number of illegal border crossing attempts.
In recent days, there have been 15 attempts at the Latvian border and 60 migrants were denied entry by Polish authorities. Since the beginning of this year, a total of 2,272 illegal migrants have been prevented from entering Lithuania from Belarus. It should be noted that some individuals have made multiple attempts to enter the country.
The influx of migrants from Belarus to Eastern EU countries has been a growing concern since 2021. The Western countries have blamed the regime in Minsk for facilitating this movement. Last year, nearly 4,200 migrants illegally arrived in Lithuania from Belarus. However, after the easing of movement restrictions, most of them left the country.
The situation at the Lithuania-Belarus border remains a significant challenge for both countries and the EU as a whole. Efforts are being made to strengthen border security and improve cooperation among neighboring countries to address this issue effectively.
