On Sunday, 21 attempts to illegally cross the border were detected at the Latvian border, with 61 migrants being denied entry into the country by Polish officials on Saturday. This year, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) has prevented a total of 2,191 illegal migrants from entering Lithuania from Belarus.
Since August 3, 2021, when Lithuanian border guards gained the authority to turn back illegal migrants, approximately 21,500 have been denied entry into the country from Belarus. Some foreigners have attempted to enter Lithuania multiple times.
The surge of migrants into Eastern European EU members from Belarus began in 2021, with the Western countries blaming the regime in Minsk for it. At that time, nearly 4,200 migrants arrived illegally from Belarus to Lithuania, but most of them left the country after movement restrictions were lifted.
