Geospatial Leaders Explain Benefits of Easier Access to High-Resolution SAR Data

Umbra and UP42, both leaders in the geospatial industry, have announced their partnership in a joint video released at the World Satellite Business Week conference. Umbra, known for its advanced space radar technology, offers the highest resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data on the UP42 marketplace.

The partnership between Umbra and UP42 brings numerous benefits to users. By capturing images at night and in challenging weather conditions, SAR satellites have the unique ability to monitor change. Access to high-resolution SAR data through UP42 will have a positive impact on various critical applications including the monitoring of oil spills, deforestation, mines, container ports, and changes in land use.

The CEO of UP42, Sean Wiid, sees this partnership as highly strategic. He highlights Umbra’s attention to high-quality data, APIs, scalable business models, and licensing as qualities that make them an ideal partner for platforms like UP42.

UP42’s customers will now have access to Umbra’s high-resolution SAR data, which offers superior image quality and advanced data processing techniques. The data has a resolution of up to 25 cm and a frequent revisit rate of 6-12 hours, making it crucial for disaster monitoring, security, and agriculture.

The announcement also focuses on UP42’s advanced tasking capabilities, which include order tracking, automated delivery, and support for complex and multi-geometry areas of interest (AOIs). Additionally, Umbra’s tasked data is stored in UP42’s STAC-compatible storage, simplifying data search and management for easier processing and integrations.

Joe Morrison, VP of Commercial Product at Umbra, emphasizes the importance of partnerships in growing the SAR data market. He believes that UP42’s technical expertise and focus on real-world applications will drive the future growth of the industry.
