Thaicom Selects Airbus to Build New Generation Satellite

Thaicom, an Asian satellite and space tech company based in Bangkok, has chosen Airbus, a leading space business, to construct its next-generation software-defined high-throughput satellite (HTS) at 119.5 degrees east.

The contract was signed between Thaicom’s subsidiary, Space Tech Innovation (STI), and Airbus Space Systems. Airbus will be responsible for designing and manufacturing the new satellite, as well as providing ground control segment components.

The selected satellite, known as OneSat, is a fully reconfigurable satellite that can adjust its coverage area, capacity, and frequency while in orbit. This feature will allow the satellite to adapt to future challenges and technologies.

The main purpose of the satellite is to provide extended connectivity in the Ku-band over the Asia-Pacific region for Thaicom’s customers and partners. Airbus aims to deliver the satellite by 2027.

Thaicom’s CEO, Patompob (Nile) Suwansiri, highlights the benefits of the new satellite, stating that it offers flexibility and instant reconfiguration to adapt dynamically to various service areas. This will enhance the confidence of Thaicom’s customers and partners in the Asia-Pacific region.

Jean-Marc Nasr, Head of Airbus Space Systems, emphasizes that this order marks the ninth for the OneSat product line, which is fully reconfigurable in orbit. He also expresses excitement about the collaboration with Thaicom, indicating the potential for further strengthening their relationship in the future.
