SES and SpaceX’s Starlink Team Up to Provide High-speed Internet for Cruise Ships

A collaboration between SES, the European satellite operator, and SpaceX’s Starlink is set to offer uninterrupted high-speed internet to cruise ships and their passengers. The joint solution combines the capabilities of both satellite constellations to provide a unique service.

The offering, called SES Cruise mPOWERED + Starlink, is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2023. It combines medium-Earth orbit (MEO) services and low-Earth orbit (LEO) networks to ensure reliable and fast internet connectivity.

Two tiers of internet solutions are available: Premium and Pro. The Premium tier provides a throughput of 3Gbps per ship, catering to those ships that require the highest speeds. The Pro tier offers 1.5Gbps per ship and allows operators to manage user experience by matching the appropriate application to the correct orbit.

SES aims to provide a world-class connectivity experience for cruise customers, similar to what they would have on land. This partnership allows them to expand their multi-orbit GEO and MEO network to include LEO, opening up new opportunities to meet the needs of cruise guests and crew members.

SpaceX’s Starlink has already gained traction in the maritime sector. In May 2023, it was announced that over 150 cruise ships were set to utilize Starlink’s internet services. On the other hand, SES has a decade of experience delivering connectivity services directly to cruise operators and is known for its innovative multi-orbit GEO and MEO-enabled networks.

This collaboration between SES and Starlink brings together the strengths and expertise of both companies, ensuring cruise operators and their guests have access to reliable and high-speed internet while at sea.
