Leadership of Geeks Without Frontiers, the N50 Project Initiative, and the Institute of Space Commerce will be advocating for accelerating SDGs at the Science Summit at UN General Assembly (UNGA 78).
The UNGA Science Summit is convening 325 sessions and 1,400 scientists, engineers, policy analysts, and investors to encourage global collaboration in attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and generating actions toward The Summit of the Future in September 2024.
The Summit will have a panel discussion on Satellite Technologies and Safeguarding Cultural Heritage on Land, Underwater, and in Our Skies. This panel will explore the role of satellites in identifying and safeguarding cultural heritage sites on Earth, balancing the use of satellites with preserving our dark and quiet skies, and art & cultural heritage beyond Earth.
Satellite technologies play a crucial role in protecting the environmental commons and humanity’s cultural heritage. They enable the identification and preservation of cultural heritage sites on Earth, allowing for their safeguarding and conservation.
Furthermore, satellites can also help in striking a balance between the use of satellite technology and the preservation of our dark and quiet skies. This is important to prevent light pollution and preserve the natural beauty of the night sky.
Moreover, space technologies open up opportunities for artistic and cultural expressions beyond Earth. With the advancement of space exploration, artists and cultural institutions are exploring the intersection of art and space, creating unique artworks and performances that transcend terrestrial boundaries.
The Science Summit at the UN General Assembly aims to foster global scientific collaboration and address the policy, regulatory, and financial environments needed to support such collaborations. It brings together experts from various fields to discuss the role of space technologies in safeguarding cultural heritage and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
