The Evolution of Storm Daniel: A Deadly Disaster in Libya

Time lapse footage captures the transformation of Storm Daniel as it approached Libya, ultimately leading to a tragic loss of lives. On September 10, the storm wreaked havoc, claiming the lives of over 2,000 people and leaving more than 10,000 individuals missing.

According to the Libyan Red Crescent Society through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the storm made its way across the Mediterranean Sea, eventually reaching eastern Libya. With wind speeds reaching 70-80 km/hr and accompanied by heavy rains, Storm Daniel caused severe damage. The torrential downpours resulted in the bursting of dams, triggering catastrophic flooding in the coastal city of Derna.

From September 8 to September 11, the time lapse video takes us through the evolution of Storm Daniel. The footage, provided by CSU/CIRA & NOAA, allows us to witness the storm’s progression as it intensified.
