Samsung to Equip All New Home Appliances with AI Enhancements

Samsung plans to incorporate neural processing units (NPUs) in all its new home appliances by 2024, according to a report by DigiTimes. This initiative is aimed at adding artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to its products, making them stand out in the market. Samsung intends to include NPUs in both premium and mainstream appliances such as Smart TVs, dishwashers, ovens, refrigerators, and air conditioners.

The integration of NPUs will enable on-device AI processing, allowing voice recognition, machine vision, and the full integration of its virtual assistant, Bixby. Bixby will now offer question-and-answer capabilities and facilitate seamless communication among various home devices. Samsung aims to develop appliances with ultra-low power consumption while ensuring the AI features are always accessible to assist customers.

Samsung’s push towards AI-enabled appliances is showcased in recent innovations. For instance, ovens can now identify the type of food being cooked and suggest appropriate cooking methods. Similarly, refrigerators are equipped with technology that recognizes stored items. These advancements improve the functionality and convenience of household appliances.

The development of NPUs for Samsung’s home appliances receives support from DeepX, an NPU provider in South Korea. DeepX plans to begin mass production of its next-generation NPU in the third quarter of next year, as it aims to eliminate competition from Chinese-made components.

Samsung’s strategy aligns with its vision of expanding the adoption of its SmartThings ecosystem. By offering more smart appliances, Samsung encourages customers to integrate their devices into the SmartThings platform, creating a seamless and integrated smart home experience.

Although the introduction of AI in home appliances has its advantages, some individuals may have concerns regarding privacy and security. Features such as voice recognition and machine vision may raise questions about data privacy and potential vulnerabilities.

Overall, Samsung’s decision to equip all new home appliances with AI enhancements reflects its commitment to providing customers with advanced technology and convenient experiences in the home environment.
