The Rotary Club of Smith Mountain Lake Opens New Satellite Club

The Rotary Club of Smith Mountain Lake has opened a new satellite club at Hot Shots Bar & Grill in Moneta, Virginia. The club will hold meetings twice monthly at this location. The first meeting took place on September 8th, and the second meeting is scheduled for September 21st at 11:30 a.m.

The Rotary Club of Smith Mountain Lake was established in 1990 and is part of a global network of 1.2 million individuals organized into 34,000 clubs. Their motto, “Service Above Self,” reflects their commitment to humanitarian work.

The club focuses on supporting local projects, particularly in Franklin and Bedford counties. One of their main initiatives is helping students excel and become future leaders. They honor outstanding teachers through their annual Excellence in Education Award Banquet and provide scholarships to local high school students at their Excellence in Education Student Luncheon. The club also sponsors high school students to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) conference at Virginia Tech.

In addition, the Rotary Club of Smith Mountain Lake addresses various community needs. Their projects include the Tackling Hunger and Nutrition initiative, which provides free fresh fruits and vegetables to needy families in the Smith Mountain Lake area. They also install 911 Emergency Dock Signs to assist first responders with locating homes in emergencies. The SML Rotary Foundation supports community projects through fundraising and donations.

Furthermore, the club offers modest financial contributions to local non-profit organizations such as SML Good Neighbors, Lake Christian Ministries, Unbridled Change, the Alex Ernandes Scholarship Foundation, and the VA Cooperative Extension Service Local Food and Garden Directory.
