Starlink, the satellite internet connection company, is now accessible in the Maldives. The first access kits are being distributed. However, the prices are too high for the general public.
Satellite internet is undoubtedly the most effective solution for connecting the people of the Maldives. The archipelago consists of a thousand islands scattered in the ocean, 200 of which are inhabited. It is impossible to cable everyone with fixed lines.
Billionaire Elon Musk’s company has obtained the distribution license for its system in the Maldives. However, it is still not affordable for everyone: the installation kit, consisting of a satellite dish and a decoder, is sold for over 600 euros. This is more expensive than in Reunion or Mayotte, where the kit is priced at 450 euros. On the other hand, the monthly subscription fee in the Maldives is slightly cheaper, at 60 euros instead of 70 euros. But it remains a luxury product that is only of interest if one has a faulty connection or resides in an area without coverage.
Satellite internet offers better speed than ADSL, but it is said to be inferior to fiber. Elon Musk has not yet been able to extend his empire across the entire Indian Ocean. He still needs to negotiate with Madagascar, Seychelles, Comoros… In Mauritius, it is expected to be available by 2024.
