Intelsat, a leading provider of inflight connectivity and the operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Aalyria, a software-defined and optical networking communications pioneer based in Livermore, California. The collaboration aims to develop a new optical technology that will enable the transfer of record amounts of data between ground and space.
The partnership between Intelsat and Aalyria will leverage Aalyria’s groundbreaking technologies to pursue highly-secure connectivity at unprecedented speeds. It will enable enhanced mobile broadband connections and contribute to Intelsat’s Next Generation Unifying Network vision, which is enabled by software-defined networking, 5G, and multi-orbit operations.
The MoU establishes a framework for the two companies to cooperatively deploy Aalyria’s software and hardware platform. This platform can orchestrate bi-directional optical ground and space connectivity for satellites at speeds of hundreds of gigabits per second. This technology will provide secure and ultra-fast ground-space connectivity for both government and commercial customers. Aalyria aims to deliver massive data files in real time and offer backup networks for those experiencing capacity shortages or compromised connectivity.
According to Chris Taylor, CEO of Aalyria, this collaboration will revolutionize space-based connectivity in the same way that the transition from copper to fiber optics transformed terrestrial connectivity. Aalyria’s multi-orbit network-as-a-service will provide secure all-optical connectivity at speeds of hundreds of gigabits per second. This will open up new possibilities for various platforms and environments such as spacecraft, aircraft, maritime, and remote field operations.
