OneWeb India, a subsidiary of Eutelsat Group and part of the Bharti Group, has been granted approval by Indian space regulator IN-SPACe to launch its commercial satellite broadband services in the country. This makes OneWeb India the first organization to receive such authorization.
Once spectrum allocation is granted by the Indian government, Eutelsat OneWeb can immediately begin offering commercial connectivity services. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Group and Co-Chair of the Board of Directors of Eutelsat Group, expressed his pleasure with the approval, emphasizing the importance of this step in realizing India’s goal of providing internet connectivity for all and supporting the vision of Digital India.
Additionally, OneWeb India has obtained in-principle approval to establish and operate two gateways in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. These gateways will facilitate the provision of high-speed, low-latency internet connectivity to customers across India once the services are rolled out.
Cyril Dujardin, Co-General Manager of Connectivity at Eutelsat Group, highlighted the importance of collaboration between businesses, governments, and regulators in bridging the global connectivity gap. With the completion of their Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation last year, Eutelsat OneWeb is well-positioned to deliver vital connectivity services to businesses throughout India.
The formation of the Eutelsat OneWeb group, resulting from the merger between two satellite operators, has made it the first fully integrated operator with a fleet of 37 geostationary satellites and a LEO constellation of over 600 satellites.
Overall, the approval granted to OneWeb India marks a significant milestone in bringing high-speed internet connectivity to all corners of India and supporting the digital transformation of the country.
