Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has reiterated his stance on the refusal to provide access to Starlink satellite in response to Ukraine’s request for coverage over Sevastapool Crimea. Musk emphasized that he is a loyal US citizen who is willing to fight and die for his country.
The controversy surrounding Musk began when Walter Isaacson, a US author, raised questions about Musk’s involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war in his autobiography of the billionaire. Musk clarified that Starlink was not intended for warfare but rather for peaceful purposes such as internet access and entertainment.
Musk expressed concern that the Ukrainian attack on Russian vessels could escalate into a nuclear war. He stated that he is a citizen of the United States, and his loyalty lies with his homeland. Musk asserted that anyone accusing him of treason is mistaken, as the US Congress has not declared war on Russia. He emphasized that Ukraine’s actions were provocative and could lead to strategic defeat.
In response to claims that an emergency request was received from Ukraine to activate Starlink in Sevastopol, Musk clarified that SpaceX had not activated the system in those regions. He explained that complying with such a request would make SpaceX complicit in an act of war and conflict escalation.
Mikhail Podoliak, a top aide of Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky, accused Musk of “committing evil” by not allowing Ukrainian drones to destroy part of the Russian fleet via Starlink interference. Podoliak criticized Musk for enabling deadly attacks on civilians.
Despite the criticism, Musk stood firm on his position, emphasizing the need for a truce and discouraging the loss of lives over territorial disputes. He previously faced criticism for his statements regarding Crimea’s recognition as part of Russia and residents’ voting on their country affiliation.
Overall, Elon Musk remains steadfast in his commitment to his home country and his belief in the peaceful uses of technology like Starlink.
