The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has recently issued an advisory to alert users about a series of fake calls received by many individuals. These calls claim that their SIM cards will be deactivated within 2 hours and request various personal details to prevent this from happening. However, the DoT has clarified that they are not making any such calls.
These fraudulent calls are being made by scammers taking advantage of the fact that DoT governs telecom services in India. To protect yourself, it is important to immediately disconnect such calls and block the numbers. Additionally, it is recommended to report these numbers to prevent others from falling victim to the scam. Apps like Truecaller allow you to report numbers and provide a description of the scam type.
Moreover, users can also report such calls on the National Crime Reporting Portal for further action.
In another development, the DoT has recently granted ISP A (National Area) license to Jio and Oneweb along with a VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) license. This comes after Jio received its ISP license last month. For those unfamiliar with VSAT, it is a device equipped with an antenna with a diameter of approximately one meter. VSAT is capable of transmitting/receiving data, voice, and video signals. It is frequently used for banking/ATM connectivity in rural areas and for providing backhaul connectivity for cellular mobile services.
With these licenses, both companies will soon provide satellite internet services in India. Jio and Oneweb have previously been granted GMPCS licenses as well, paving the way for satellite internet connectivity in the country.
